Choosing A New Pool Surface: 3 Important Factors To Consider

September 29, 2023

The pool surface you choose is essential in determining how long the surface lasts, what it looks like, and what it feels like. While plaster pool surfaces are traditionally the most common, the pool surface industry has come a long way. Now, you can choose from multiple types of finishes and potential water colors to customize your pool to your specific desires.

Here are 3 factors to consider when choosing a new pool surface.

#1. The Type Of Pool Finish

There are 4 main types of pool finishes: plaster, quartz, pebble, and polished.

#1. Plaster

It used to be that white plaster was the only available option for pool surfaces. While pool surfaces have expanded to more beautiful and longer-lasting options, plaster finishes remain a popular choice.

You can opt for a standard plaster finish, which can be dyed to the color you prefer, or you can choose a premium plaster finish. Premium plaster finishes are denser and more durable than your standard plaster.

#2. Quartz

You can have a natural quartz or a colored quartz finish. The percentage of quartz sand in the finish varies depending on the manufacturer. At Wet Edge Technologies, our natural quartz pool finishes are 100% quartz.

#3. Pebble

Exposed pebble finishes have more texture than plaster or quartz, but many people love the more natural bumpy feel this gives their pool. The pebbles can disguise inherent imperfections in the cement, for a more aesthetically pleasing pool. They’re also more resilient to staining than other types of pool finishes.

#4. Polished

You can get a standard polished finish or a premium polished finish. Polished pool finishes are smooth and luxurious. They’re also easier to remove stains from than other types of pool surfaces. Premium polished finishes give you the look of a pebble pool but with the smoothness of a polished one, so if you love that natural look, but don’t want to feel the pebbles against your skin, this is the perfect pool finish for you.

#2. The Pool Water Color

Once you’ve narrowed down the type of pool finish you want, it’s time for the fun part: water color. Whether you want a dark pool, a blue pool, an aqua green pool, or another color, you have plenty of options at your fingertips. When choosing a pool water color, it’s important to consider how it will look with the rest of your property and whether you want your pool to stand out or to blend in with the surroundings.

Now, pool water color can be tricky. You can have the exact same pool finish as someone else, but your pool’s water color could be different. Many different variables impact pool water color. #3. Additional Options For Pool Surfaces

You can add pizzazz to your pool surface by having additional pigments/dyes or other options added to your finish. For instance, glass beads make your pool sparkle, giving it extra flair. These are optional, so you don’t have to have them, but if you feel like your pool surface is missing something special, they could be just what you need to take it to the next level.

Some of the options you can add to your Wet Edge pool surface include:

  • Colored quartz
  • Glass beads
  • Ocean shells
  • Pigment/dye

These options do add to the cost of your pool surface, but for something special that brings your dream to life, they’re more than worth it.
